Shooting Venue – Royal Artillery Barracks
Location : London | Status : Completed | Sector : London 2012, Sport
Richard Arnold was the Project Sponsor with the Olympic Delivery Authority for the development of the temporary shooting venue at Woolwich from its initial conception through to completion.
The venue was located at the historic Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich and was used for shooting disciplines in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games as well as Paralympic Archery. By delivering a temporary venue it enabled shooting to be at the heart of the host city unlike previous Games and also ensured the athletes were able to stay in the Olympic Village.
The large temporary seating enclosures were formed through 18,000 m2 of PVC membrane combined with vibrantly coloured openings within the façade to help create tension in the fabric as well as providing natural ventilation and light to the venue. The structures were designed and engineered so that they can be relocated to other sites and used after the Games with no environmental impact on the existing site.
Construction took 10 months and was delivered below the original budget.
